Though there is another reason. The world simply lacks the prana necessary to house such creatures now. We have moved past the Age of Gods.

In simplest terms, think of it as a type of life energy. During the Age of Gods it was in such abundance that magic was considered commonplace, and creatures needing great amounts of prana were able to coexist with humanity.
