But I am getting ahead of myself. Initially we were all together in... space. I assume a simulation of some kind, as we were able to breathe. But then Ochako and I were separated and taken to a simulation of a rocky planet where we were forced to battle two monsters.

We were victorious, and only suffered mild injuries. The next place was some sort of facility room, and that's where we found Soo-Won and Xie Lian, dead in two chairs. Ochako discovered two serums that supposedly would bring them back to life, albeit with... side-effects.
[Frowning now. Just guess what happened]
They were brought back to life, yes, but were murderous and had to be killed again before they took our lives.
They came back to life without our input before we returned here.
[Frowning again]
Some had suggested a simulation, but I am not familiar with that technology... and also, I assumed a simulation would not have such permanent wounds included into the programing.
Someone says a word. Say 'Banana' for example. The next person has to say a word that starts with the last letter of the previous word. So 'apple'. And then players keep going back and forth until a word is repeated or someone can't say a word within a second or two.
